Hello guys,

I am new to the forum and to collecting. I noticed the reverse of this 1909 Lincoln Wheat penny has an error that looks like it has a crack in the die. Can someone please help me figure out what type of error this is?

Secondly, I wanted to ask why the '9' in the date 1909 is not more closed like a proper looking '9'. I have seen several old penny's with the number '9' not being printed properly. Is this common?

Thanks very much. Your messages help me understand more of the Coin World, which is very complicated with so much to learn!

to CCF, on the reverse of your cent is a lamination error and a nice sized one to boot. As far as your question directed towards the 9... don't have an answer for you...your nine looks normal to me for that year....good luck on future finds have fun....

Other than seeing the Lamination, I am not seeing anything else going on. It's a keeper though, so save it. Put in a 2x2 for protection.

Nice find on the lamination.

The "open" 9 is just the style or font that the mint chose to use on the design. There was probably a logical and practical reason for it at the time. (Open 9, straight leg 9 or other styles)
It may have been as simple as just inverting the 6 when creating the dies.

Nice coin. The 9 is correct--per the font type used by the mint during that era.

Another example of the lamination being loosened during the upset process and starting to fall off after the strike.
