I really . . . really like that! From the backwards S in Souvenir on the obverse to the horseshoe (that is unlucky hanging that way) on the back. Appropriate as The Maine was unlucky. If you hang a horseshoe open end up it will hold it's luck. If it hangs the opposite the luck runs out.

I avidly collected Spanish-American War tokens, ones that celebrated victory and were used for advertising, many years ago. Having not seen this one before, I suspect it's a fairly scarce piece. Cool acquisition, this! Thanks for posting.

There are several different tokens with the Maine horseshoe reverse. I wrote an article on these and other Battleship Maine relic tokens and medals; it was published in the July-August 2020 of the Token and Medal Society's TAMS Journal. If you collect tokens you should belong to this non-profit organization. Feel free to contact me for membership information.

There is also a memorial to the Battleship Maine Sailors in the Key West Cemetery.

@banjo, if your article is freely available, would you mind posting a link to it on this thread? Thx.

There are several varieties of this piece, and this one is fairly common. I discuss them, and many other medals made of metal from the battleship in an article, "A MAINE TO REMEMBER; NUMISMATIC MEMENTOS OF THE ILL-FATED BATTLESHIP, which was published in the TAMS Journal. If you aren't a member of the Token and Medal Society, I strongly recommend membership in this non-profit group, which has been publishing its Journal and numerous books since 1961.

I forgot to mention that if the back issue of the TAMS Journal in which this article appeared is no longer available from TAMS, I'll be glad to send a pdf to anyone who becomes a member.
