Okay, I am new to this board and have looked all over and cannot find any info. My mother in law has what appears to be 2 different 1799 Draped Bust Dollars. 1 looks normal as it should the other however is missing the word "Liberty" above the bust. It is in very good condition with all the details still very visible. Can anyone tell me if this is a legidimate error of a fake. Also I am near the Los Angeles area and am looking for a coin place that I can take these to for certification. thanks in advance. I will try to attach photos for reference. Photos show both coins, 1 with & 1 without Liberty. Image: 1799front.jpg58.4 KB Image: 1799back.jpg57.41 KB

Hi, The one on the Left without LIBERTY is a way for the manufacturer to get around the "Hobby Protection Act" that since 1974 or so requires that the word COPY be on the piece. Leaving LIBERTY off, gives the maker an excuse to sell it in that it is not a Copy. They sell them to the uninformed. The one on the right is an obvious fake as well. The numerals are all wrong, the Lettering is all wrong, the stars are all wrong, the denticles are all wrong, etc. etc. etc. Many of these are made in China. Many, believe it or not have been distributed by the homeless in CA and elsewhere. They are given access to them at $3.00 to $5.00 each and then they are sold to the unwary passerby for $20.00 to $25.00 each. Below is a Link to the City of Long Beach's, CA warning on the subject. In any case, they are not real. http://www.longbeach.gov/news/displ...&targetid=21Thanks, Bill

Agreed, both are fakes. Buy a copy of the Red Book (Guide Book of US coins, edited by Ken Bressett). Read it, and then read it again.

I do hope that his/her first experience here didn't turn him/her off. Sometimes when folks don't hear what they hoped to hear, they look elsewhere. I hope he/she does his/her own research into these as that will help him/her a great deal.
Thanks, Bill
