Its a little hard to tell from the pics but its either post mint damage or a de-lamination of the plachet .

Im leaning toward post mint damage .

Colleen, this is a very nice cion, in that according to the pictures, presents a few ideas .I see the rim on the coin @ the "break " and the thickness of the rimbefore the break and after are different, not just a little.I also see @ the break a sign of heat or stress( the color being of a golden hue) almost like someone tried to fix or braze the coin ? I know this sounds crazy but if you look at it good this does appear to be, at least from the pictures.I also see and wonder when it broke pre , during or post minting because it appears the letters do not line up .I just thought I would share what I think, and clearly see a break, and have to wonder why and when. BE WELL

it still looks like a big scratch across the coin to me . the N is disfigured and metal is pushed aside , that is why it looks post mint to me .

Metalman - Impossible, and I can tell you why...

The edges of the mark are caved in, proving that the metal was never there to be struck. If it were a scratch, there would be ridges on the edges of the mark - like dragging a stick through pasty mud. You don't get 'rid' of the mud when you drag the stick through it, you simply push it to the side.

There is no mud pushed to the side on this coin.

coppercoins:
I'll stick with a lamination.
I don't see a crack in the rim.
But, seeing the reverse may change my mind.

I believe it's a cracked planchet due to post mint damage.
The arrows point to where rim got hit. Then coin started to delaminate afterwards. That's also why the letters are shifting in the direction of how it was(hit)damaged.
