From wikipedia: The Fenn Treasure was a cache of gold and jewels that Forrest Fenn, an art dealer and author from Santa Fe, New Mexico, hid in the Rocky Mountains of the United States in 1988. The Treasure was found recently in 2020. In 1988, Fenn was diagnosed with cancer and given a prognosis that it was likely terminal. This inspired him to hide a treasure chest in an outdoor location with the purpose of creating a public search for it. He also intended the location to be his final resting place, with the treasure as a legacy. He recovered from the illness."

Would be great to stumble on something like that, almost equally gratifying to be able to go through it with Fenn himself, still alive and well!

saw a video about this just days ago. I cannot imagine myself finding something like that. it'd probably trigger a heart attack.

I wonder if those gold coins could be graded and labeled as "from the Forrest Fenn treasure". That would be some pedigree!

I am sure representatives from each of the TPGs have initiated contact with and offered propositions to the finder.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing, mostly negative. Five people died looking for it. In my local observation (I have a neighbor who did search & rescue), the amount of damage to parks and property, and the number of yahoos having to be rescued, is under-reported in the Wikipedia on it. For example: "Rescuers relieved after Forrest Fenn's $2M treasure found" https://www.denverpost.com/2020/06/...rs-relieved/ They pleaded with him to call it off in 2016 and he refused. At that point it became selfish.

Beyond the cool factor this makes me dad for a different reason.
Look at that 1903 $20. Ruined. No care was taken in the preservation of these coins. Many could have been MS, but could now be forever damaged.

I'd bet that most if not all of those gold coins were circulated, and gold is pretty inert. Except for that 1903, the coins are probably no worse for the wear after 20 years.
