Does anyone happen to have a picture of an 1878-S short nock? I looked on VAM World, but I can't seem to find a pic of the short one. I think that I know what the differance is, but I would like to be sure. Thanks for the help! M-noob |

Depends on the condition of the coin, also all long nock 78S are top 100 coins.

doesn't really matter on condition there have been NO 1878-S Long Nock certified in Mint State condition by the big 3 (even though I have been looking for years as has many others) and a 1878-s regular nock goes for pennies on the dollar to what a long nock does of the same date and mint mark. I used to specialize in MS long nock 1878 Morgan VAM's and the 1878-s is the only one I had to settle for a AU-58 in because they just aren't available or known in MS-60 or above |

BRYAN, what would you pay or think would be fair to pay for a MS-60-62 1878-S LONG NOCK MORGAN?

if it was certified as such by NGC or PCGS (because it would have to be problem free) it would go for crazy money because I could probably sit here and name quite a few people with deep pockets that have been looking for one certified (especially by PCGS and NGC) for years to no avail. I can almost bet it would go down in record as the highest valued 1878-S Morgan known and if it were up for sale it would draw allot of attention so there is no telling what a "fair" price would be. A raw example in the EF range if problem free would probably go for 150-200 which is about 10-15 times what a regular 1878-S would go for and since it would be the only one ever certified you could probably name your price and then you have the VAM side of it also which if its the right VAM number it would just add to the value but I think it being the only MS coin known to exist would be enough to keep it out of the price range of most people except the deep pocketed ones building #1 registry sets |

BRYAN, thanks for your reply, I had seen some beautiful 1878-s's yesterday at a friends, there was one that was in at least ms-60 and of the long nock type.This person called upon me to assist her in setting a VAM # to some coins,MOST WERE 1878-S'S, she was asked to sell.I was up the night before till early morning checking LMC's and was not very alert, later I realized what she has..........PS: THESE ARE ALL RAW COINS, they were partially covered with a clear glue like substance that when peeled off , where ever it is, is brillant underneath...... |

that would definately be a coin I would send off to probably PCGS if it is problem free or even has a chance at being problem free because like I said (as far as I know) it would be the only Mint State 1878-S Long Nock known. I have been out of the long nock seen for about 8 months but haven't read of any coming to light in that time and I looked at NGC's website and they still haven't graded any higher than AU-58 so chances are PCGS hasn't either. If she is willing to sell I would get it certified and graded and then I would probably call all the coin magazines to let them know so they could write a article (if PCGS doesn't announce it themselves, which they should since it would be the first one they have ever graded out of the millions of Morgans they have graded and since it would be such a special coin) and then cosign it with a major auction house that can promote it also and then just let the bidders come and sit back and watch
