The obverse sure looks AT'd to me. Either way, I don't find this appealing.

Actually, I think it's natural, but would get AT'd at a TPG, or to clarify, would be given an AT Designation at a TPG.

Looks like it happens naturally, but yea, I can see why some would question it

Natural toning, but that does not matter since there is too much overlap in the results.
The correct answer: this is not market acceptable toning.

Grape, isn't ANACS a TPG? Looks cool to me, but if raw I would have guessed AT.

@jbucks what do you mean by too much overlap in the results?

Natural, but the seller has put this under a nuclear powered lamp so don't expect it to look like that. In hand, it will probably look like dark toning with just a hint of color.

@suipakpaikungfu, ANACS is a TPG. I meant a more, well, major TPG (NGC/PCGS).

I think the photo was juiced a little. Toning probably is not as bold in hand.

Quote: @jbucks what do you mean by too much overlap in the results? A large majority of toning cannot be attributed as natural or artificial. Toning is a chemical process. More often than not, how that process unfolded is unknown unless you were there to observe it. The coin either looks appealing (acceptable) or not.

Quote: The coin either looks appealing (acceptable) or not. This. One other problem when people buy colorfully toned coins: toning is an ongoing chemical process. What has eye-appealing color today may not have eye-appealing color in 20 years.

This is correct. You can slow it down with proper isolation and storage, but it is quite possible your heirs will not see the same coin you see.
