Today's puzzle is a 1889-P with a die chip in the cap.
This would seem to be either a VAM 18 or 18A, but I'm not seeing the ear doubling.
Are there other diagnostics I'm missing?
Is there another VAM that has the die chip?

Any help is as always appreciated.

The shape and location of the so called die chip on your coin does not match VAM 18 or 18a. Looks to be a small nick on the coin rather than a die chip.

AU99o, thanks for your response.

I agree that the chip on my 1889-P doesn't seem to be exactly correct, but it is definitely a chip and not a scratch. I'm trying to see the ear doubling or some other diagnostics that confirm or deny that it's an 18A. I just can't detect the ear doubling.

Any help is appreciated.

Sharper pictures may help, but I think that is the correct die chip for 18/18A, and the date position looks right. Hard to tell about ear doubling from the photos.

Zurie and AU90o, I've taken a few more pictures and tried to get a better view of the ear.
I know that the images still are not very clear due to shooting thru the stupid slab.
I just can't see the doubling on the ear even with a loop and eyeglasses. Can either of you?
If the ear isn't doubled, does the die chip exist on some VAM other than the 18 or 18A?
