I noticed on my 1879-S Morgan that there is what can best be described as a gouge of some sort at the very top of the letters L and I in LIBERTY. Both the L and the I are clear and do not show any signs of the gouge, but it's distinct underneath both letters. I don't see any reference to this in any of the VAM's for 1879-S. I know it doesn't show up well in the pictures below, but they are the best I can do. I'm thinking perhaps a flaw in the planchet?

Your thoughts and/or comments are welcome.

are you referring to the dark shade right below the top serif of L and I? I think thats just a scrape on the surface just like the one above the eyelid.

AU99o, Yes, I am referring to the dark shape but it's under the letters LI and not on top of them. That's why I think it's a flaw in the planchette or something. If it was a scrape, it would be on top of the letters, right?

AU99o, Here are several more pictures. I think a couple of them show a little more clearly how the gouge, or whatever, is underneath the LI and not on top of it.
Perhaps someone was really bored and took a very fine pick and performed a scraping between the letters?

Do these pictures change your mind?
I think pictures 1, 2 and 3 show it most clearly.
