Hi All, It's been so dog gone HOT lately...just been trying to stay cool inside. Started looking at my LWC's and noticed this 13D. I bought so many of these coins so long ago that once I filled my book it was on to a new adventure...cars, girls...you get the picture... Noticed all these raised chips (filings) and saw the D just below the E in ONE CENT...not sure if it is or isn't...? Take a peek and let me hear what you have to say. Thanks for the views and replies!! smat

@smat, that sure looks like damage to me. Have you compared the dimensions of this interesting spot on the rev to the mintmark? It seems like it is a bit smaller based on these pics.

The reverse looks like a contact mark that made that shape. The obverse dies is the only ones present when the mintmark is added. Just part of what ever altered the other areas on the reverse. Not a MM. (too small anyway)

That's cool...now that I looked at it again...does look a little small. What do you think about all those raised spots on the reverse...? smat

Looks like it was struck with a rusted, pitted reverse die.

Rusted dies would show incuse marks on the coin. I feel it may have spent sometime outside. What ever happened it doesn't add a premium for this coin. More of a distraction. 20 more to go.

COOP...so you think it may have been outside...laying face down...by perhaps a smelter or welder and it got splattered...? interesting...I can run with that. I don't think it deserved a premium...I don't get why folks pay for defected coins...kinda like lamination's...I don't get it...my kids are gonna have to deal with that...I'm not selling...I'm a keeper. I'm just curious what may have happened so I can tell the kids to take this into consideration when they sell em... Thanks Man smat

The spots look like glue to me. The "D" looks like glue as well.
Try soaking in acetone and see if it comes off.

Rust is a form of corrosion that eats away at metal. When the rust is removed there will be a depression where it has eaten away at the metal. That depression in the die where rust was removed will leave raised marks on the coin.
