Hi, I've recently gotten into looking for coin errors and I've found a very odd nickel, and I can't figure out what type of error it is. It's slightly smaller than a normal nickel, has a much thicker edge than normal, and a very pronounced ridge on the outside of the faces. The date is partially cut off, and I can only read the first, second, and fourth digits, which are 1, 9, and 4. The third could be a 6 or an 8.

This one is a picture of the rim, to give you an idea of the shape of it:

Edit: I put it next to a nickel from around the same year, and measured the difference in diameters. This nickel is only smaller in diameter than normal by about half a millimeter.

@ibs, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks like a washer Dryer Coin to me.

Oops!

This is called a Dryer Coin. It went for a long spin in a commercial drier. We see these a lot:

The longer the ride, the more damage is done:

Oh, okay, thanks. I was thinking it could have been damage, but I couldn't think of anything that could have done that. I had no idea a washing machine could do something like that to a coin. I wonder, how many times would this thing have had to smash into the bottom of the washer for it to look like this?

They are left in there until someone sees them and picks them up. Could be hours/days/weeks? Who knows.

First,

Now that you have the answer, it might be worth keeping it as a novelty item. It's a fun discussion starter!

Keep bringing your finds and questions to these boards. It's a great learning experience.
