Hi, I've recently gotten into looking for coin errors and I've found a very odd nickel, and I can't figure out what type of error it is. It's slightly smaller than a normal nickel, has a much thicker edge than normal, and a very pronounced ridge on the outside of the faces. The date is partially cut off, and I can only read the first, second, and fourth digits, which are 1, 9, and 4. The third could be a 6 or an 8. This one is a picture of the rim, to give you an idea of the shape of it: Edit: I put it next to a nickel from around the same year, and measured the difference in diameters. This nickel is only smaller in diameter than normal by about half a millimeter. Edited by ibuildstuff 07/05/2020 7:45 pm

@ibs, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks like a washer Dryer Coin to me. Oops!

Oh, okay, thanks. I was thinking it could have been damage, but I couldn't think of anything that could have done that. I had no idea a washing machine could do something like that to a coin. I wonder, how many times would this thing have had to smash into the bottom of the washer for it to look like this?

Dryer. happens a lot. They are left in there until someone sees them and picks them up. Could be hours/days/weeks? Who knows.

First, Now that you have the answer, it might be worth keeping it as a novelty item. It's a fun discussion starter! Keep bringing your finds and questions to these boards. It's a great learning experience.
