Hello everyone,

I am new to the community and this is my first post.

I just picked up the hobby of coin roll hunting and have watched several videos on hub doubling and doubled die coins. It is still hard for me to tell whether a coin is machine doubled or from an actual doubled die. So I am reaching out to the experts.

I believe it is a doubled die coin due to the fact the mint mark is rotated and the doubling appears to rotate on the devices on the outside of the coin in a consistent pattern of rotation.

I don't see another mint mark underneath the one on the coin so it would make sense to me why they had to squeeze the hub to the die a second time.

Anyway, enough of my spiel. I look forward to hearing from you guys.

Thank you.

So it's just that the mint mark is rotated with MD and/or DDD? I had a picture with this coin next to a coin with a normal mint mark but I couldn't get the file size below 300k. :(

Mint marks were hand applied to each working die until 1990, when they added the mint mark to the master die. So, prior to 1990 mint marks will vary in location.

Looks like die wear on nickels enlarge the devices:

You coin is a die state later than these coins above. It is is die wear affecting the devices on your coin. (I always wondered about that, and with images from PCGS, I could make a test and it shows it does) Inquiring minds need to know.

Thanks again and thank you for the pics. It's still tricky for me to be able to tell the difference. I guess it takes years of practice. Is there any literature you recommend as far as error coins?
