Is US Mint A Good Or Bad Place To Purchase Coins?

The answer is neither or both.

If you want the latest coins and like collecting the sets, the US Mint is a good place to buy them. The cost is fair, the product is usually excellent and usually comes well packed. And sometimes you may get lucky and buy an item that appreciates in value.

BUT for the vast majority of items the US mint sells, you would be $$$ wiser getting it on the secondary market. Most proof sets, commerratives and silver/gold coins are cheaper from a local coin shop than from the mint. I've picked up a few silver commemoratives for a $ 1 over spot these sold for $40-$60 per coin when offered by the US Mint.

BUT I also purchased 2 reverse proof ASE at $65 each and they are currently worth over $1000.

So is the mint a good or bad place to buy the answer is neither or both depending on the item.

If the Mint is selling something you like, then it's a definitely a good place to buy it. While you can often find modern coins for less than issue price on the secondary market, that's not always the case, and personally I'd rather not take the chance. I also don't want to wait for that to happen and then have to search for a particular item when I could've been enjoying it in my collection for a while.

So although it's certainly a matter of personal preference, I would say the Mint is definitely a good place to purchase coins.
