I have a several new mint rolls of Jefferson, Adams, and etc in the new Presidential dollars. I really want to just keep them in the rolls and not take them out. I do this with the new coins..lol Ever since I read that there might be godless Jeffs, etc I have been SOOO tempted to open them! So far I have not done it. Does anyone know of a way to look at the edges without opening the roll? I do not know if the "see through an enveloped" (hexane) way will work with roll paper. I have a feeling it might tone the coins too, but not in a good way that NGC or PCGS would like..lol I really want to look at my 2007 and 2008 Sacagawea rolls too. From what I read PCGS is offering a reward of 10,000 to anyone that brings a sac dollar with Presidential dollar edges and has it slabbed by PCGS. Anybody have any answers? If they are just unc rolls from a bank that you purchased for face value, then crack those suckers open! However, if they are Mint rolls(purchased from the Mint website for a premium) in the special mint wrappers then you have to decide whether you want to gamble with any added premium the wrapper may bring or split it open to see if you got lucky.
I personally do not feel that those rolls are worth any more than a solid date/mint mark roll purchased from a bank. However, they can only be purchased at a premium price from the Mint and they sell in the secondary market for more than face with the wrappers as well.

Crack them, what fun is it not doing so :) I will add that the odds are probably not in your favor, but good luck :)

Well you can try carefully cutting a slot through the paper so you can peek inside to see if the lettering is there. (You could do a series of small windows so you can check all of the coins and still make it obvious that the roll itself has not been opened.) Quote:From what I read PCGS is offering a reward of 10,000 to anyone that brings a sac dollar with Presidential dollar edges and has it slabbed by PCGS. That was for the FIRST Sac with a president dollar edge, and it has already been claimed. One turned up in Denver in late 2007.

there has only been one found and it was from someone that lived very close to the mint (conspiracy theorists say its someones friend that works for the mint and created it just for the reward money) same thing has happened with all the other reward money PCGS has offered, different people that live very close to the Denver Mint has claimed it so some people think there is one guy at the mint supplying his friends with these Reward coins and splitting the money with the friends that are submitting them to PCGS

I did think it was kind of odd that both the edge and the blank presidential planchet edge were in Colorado. In the article the guy said he found it in his "spare change" (no pun intended for my webshow..lol) However it was a sac 2007? All of the 2007 were never circulated as far as I know.

There are two ways that I can think of how a 2007 Sac would make it into commerce channels(bank, circulation, whatever)- 1st would be a collector searching for high grade Sackies out of bags or rolls sold by the Mint- all of the low grade coins get dumped for face value. I can personally vouch for this way of obtaining them because I got some 2006s and 2007s(Ps and Ds) out of a mixed roll at a bank- they were nice MS coins, albeit with a couple fingerprints on them Of course, if someone was searching Sackies for nice examples, would they miss one with edge lettering? Probably not. 2nd way would be through sheer accident. From what I understand, the edge lettering is applied after the coin is minted so all it would take would be a leftover Sac in a hopper of freshly minted Presidential dollars headed for the edge lettering process(or someone mischeviously tossing one into the hopper ) They all look golden so cannot be separated by easy sight or size, it runs through the edger, then into a ballistic pallet and off to an armored car carrier for rolling/distribution. For someone to try and sneak a clandestinely minted coin out of the Mint would be very risky and difficult, not to mention the fact that it would be a federal felony offense. I do not know what Mint employees make in a year but I would assume that they are fairly well compensated like most government employees- lets say $30-40,000/year minimally. Would you want to risk a nice paying gov't job along with benefits for what would probably be a $5000 payday but probable prison time if you are caught? Only a moron would take a deal like that. Then again, that schmuck who smuggled a few serial number-less sheets of $100s out of the BEP a few years ago probably thought he would get away with it too and he was spending them at face value

Could be. I lived in Denver until a year ago and not that many people use the Presidential dollars from what I remember (not that many people use them in Philly either..lol). Back in 2000 (before I started collecting) I use the sac dollars just for the novelty of it in parking machines in Denver..lol but I stopped after 2000. They were just to much to carry around. There has to be more of the edged sac out there because if this guy found it in his spare change then someone has to have at lest one or two more in a roll they have not opened.. (This makes me want to open my rolls even more ) If I do I'll let you know what I find but my odds are very looowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
