Never seen anything like this. At first you'd think the copper coating has come off but what has happened to the letters and the numbers

It does seem like the copper plating has been stripped off, but I'm not sure whether it is through flame or chemical exposure. For reference, the melting point of zinc is about 800F while the melting point for copper is nearly 2000F. What is the weight?

Exposed to extreme heat and a dose of environmental agents--so it seems.

Environmental post mint damage. This coin has all the characteristics of being a buried coin.
