Which begs the question, probably a dumb one, but for the sake of "What If's)

If one had access to an original die and the press out of one of the museums, say the #1 press at the Nevada museum.

Could one create a fake that couldn't be detected?

I mean, Government cover ups are all the rage now, what if one of the die's that were ordered destroyed wasn't.

Knowing nothing about the process to even mint a coin, having the above equipment, could it be done?

Please don't bash me, I'm trying to learn more about the hobby, and I'm sure someone will tell my why it isn't possible beyond the legal implications and lack of materials.

Things that make you go Hmmmm. lol

Dan Carr (Moonlight Mint?) has a press that came from the Denver mint and uses it to make a number of fantasy overstrikes using genuine coins and overstriking them with dates that did not exist, including 1964 Peace dollars.
Many on here disapprove of him doing this, others own some of his overstikes and enjoy them.

Guilty! I like the Carr overstrikes and have many of them.

Daniel makes his own dies. His overstrikes, therefore do not match any known dies, specifically since therer were never made with those dates on them. And I beleive it was on this forum once he made a post saying that although he can make his own dies, the nuances of the actual ones used at the mint would be impossible to duplicate even with the right equipment (think die markers etc.)

However, it just seems logical if an old die was never defaced (which the mint does with used dies), that someone using an old press could make a non-detectable fake. But it would require a lot of special know how and having access to the equipment.

BTW - yes, please do point us to the article you mentioned.

It was a coinweek article, it just got me thinking if it would be possible.

https://coinweek.com/dealers-compan...ollar-exist/

I should have been more specific, the die/hub they found, not a coin.

Its dated 2016, so its not new news, just was wondering.
