I followed the original thread. It's a cool story. My only critique is that you could edit out the whole gun thing. I realize that it appeals to a certain audience, but to a wider audience it really has nothing to do with the story. I mean, seriously, you think you need to be "packing" to take it to a coin shop, and then you stick it in the mail? If somebody follows you out of a coin shop and shoves a gun in your face, what are you going to do? Give them the coin or pull out your piece and blaze away? You've introduced something into your discovery and subsequent sale that doesn't add anything to the narrative. I don't want to start any gun debate; this is a coin forum. I'm just saying it doesn't fit into the video.
Ok, so it was a little dramatic. Most of our coin shops around here double as pawn shops. Don't get me wrong, I love the pawn shops but they do tend to draw a certain crowd. My real real plan was to toss the coin to TJ and run ;) In all seriousness though, I'm not used to the feeling of walking around with 6k in my pocket and it was very uncomfortable for me. At least the postal service has insurance.
I knew Jeff's Dad (Jim) back when I lived in Boise back in the 80's. Jeff got old...lol! (Heck, all of us old time coin guys are getting old!)
Enjoyed the story behind the coin and the story of getting it slabbed and auctioned. It'll be interesting to watch it appear a few more times before it hits a permanent home. I think the BIN auction it is in right now is a pipe dream at 15K$.
I still think it will eventually get busted out of the slab and "conserved".
Awesome video as always and congrats on the final price...
Nice guns too... Don't apologize for being a "little dramatic"... Safety and security is YOUR responsibility and I don't blame you one bit for packing while carrying something that valuable around... I would have too...
Awesome video! It really makes me want to keep digging. I know some people are leery about weapons, and that's their right, I suppose. As for me, I grew up in a military family in a small town, and firearms have always been a fact of life. I'm sure 90% of the pawnshops and LCS's I go to have someone armed on the premises. Personally, my favorite PM besides silver and gold is probably lead.
Glad you were pleased with the results. Getting the find out there for collectors to see it, discuss it, and share your excitement, was an experience.
My original statements on the 1st Thread still hold water. I had hoped that your find would have been better received by Heritage. Based on what you said, I too would have been insulted and as a result, you decided to sell through a smaller auction house.
Your story has been one of the most interesting reads on this or any other U.S. Coin Forum in recent memory. Ranks right up there with my locating an 1892-Micro O Half in AU condition - "cleaned" and retoned.
