Saw this penny listed in an online auction and I found the rim quite odd. Can anyone tell me what exactly I might be seeing? Is this some kind of known mint error or just PMD?

Thanks in advance,

JDRMCB

Very odd - wait for Coop or Mike Diamond to chime in.

My first thought was former Encased Coin. Let's wait for the pros.

And the winner is John1! Yes this has been removed from an encasement from the 1901 Pan American exposition in Buffalo NY. Here is one still in the encasement.

You can see how the leaves and the stem of the four leaf clover overlap the rim of the cent. This OP cent was in a different rotation in the encasement. On the OP coin the mark by the first 1 is where the stem overlapped. On the pictured piece it overlaps by the second 1.

Wow! Consider me impressed! I've seen many great responses to seemingly difficult questions on here but none has ever been that definitive.
I don't know how you did it....but you have solved the mystery without a shadow of a doubt, because that is exactly what caused the rim anomaly on that penny.

And for that I thank you!

So Bravo my good man!

I cheated. I've seen a lot of cents removed from encasements with damaged rims, so the encasement idea was a good one. I also know that a lot of souvenir Encased Cents were made at the Pan American Exhibition in 1901 with 1901 Indian Head cents in them. So I went looking for an image of one to see if the marks would match up. They did, so I posted.

Usually you can't find the specific encasement that produces the damaged rim you see on a "removed from encasement", but the 1901 date made it easy because the 1901 Pan American encasements are very well known. If it had been a 1904 I would have gone looking for a 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair encasement. There aren't a lot of Indian Head cent encasements.
