You never remember the coins you win, but you sure remember the ones that get away. Did the buyer get a good deal on this one. I just want to wallow in my remorse for a while longer. I was second bidder.

This should make you feel better Ed, there is no such reverse die as an O/CC dated 1884. If that was really a document from Walter Breen he was wrong. The ANACS photo-grade certificate is correct calling it an O/O and it looks like it may be a VAM-10 which is not a value added VAM as far as I am aware even being a HOT 50 listing.
Although, that Walter Breen document may be collectable for all I know....

Breen made some mistakes during his career....this is one of the minor ones.

I would imagine the letter and coin are collectibles each in their own right. The high bidder thought it was anyway!

Breen walks this back in his encyclopedia. On the 1884 O: "many with repunching on date or mintmark; some look almost as though O is over S or C (not confirmed)."

Very interesting nonetheless

IMHO, you saved your money.

The Breen documentation isn't unique. I've seen it a couple times on bourse floors, and it appears off and on in ebay sales. For example, see current listing 372783194230

1884-O VAM-10 is a fun one, but isn't terribly scarce. Remember that 1884-O VAM-50 seems to be the same die pair as VAM-10, and its listings should be aggregated with VAM-10 to determine frequency of finding this variety.

Thanks. And thanks for the ebay listing link. That's the same letter as in the other listing, and both letters say it's the first one I've seen. One of the two sellers is lying.

So we had counterfeit coins, and TPG slabs came along to certify them.. but then we get counterfeit TPG slabs, and now counterfeit letters from Walter Breen. Man, that's just sad.

I don't know that the Breen letters are counterfeit.

Breen did a LOT of really wrong things in his life. One of the least of them was that he wallpapered the market with these ridiculous authentication letters back in the day. He was on a mission to convince people this was O/CC. It isn't. It's just an RPM, not an OMM.
