I picked up this interesting medal recently. The weight is 15.6 grams, it is 35 mm in diameter and is apparently sterling silver. There is also a brass version. I do not know who made it.
Issued in 1917, it is a British anti-German propaganda medal. On the reverse is a quotation from Goethe "THE PRUSSIAN IS CRUEL BY BIRTH CIVILIZATION WILL MAKE HIM FEROCIOUS", and a list of German atrocities, specifically:
1. The burning of Louvain, Belgium in 1914;
2. The sinking of the British ocean liner Lusitania in 1915;
3. The execution of a British nurse, Edith Cavell, for helping several allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium in 1915;
4. The execution of a British mariner, Captain Charles Fryatt in 1916;
5. The German Zeppelin attacks in 1916
The obverse is said to be death on horseback, riding in front of Paris, with the inscription: "Nach Paris" (To Paris) 1914.
The obverse was inspired by a German propaganda medal, prepared in the expectation of the capture of Paris in 1914, which did not take place.
