Oh, and I picked it up for $300 bucks at the local coin shop, figured I couldn't walk away.

Difficult to tell if it's MS from the photos, I'm at AU-58/MS63

Definite friction on the cheek, obverse fields, and reverse high points. Strong remaining luster and no obvious signs of abuse. AU-58 and nice.

MS/AU hard to tell. Are you going to submit it?

Yeah, in hand it has crazy bright luster, figure it is worth submitting.

Enough surface marks that I'd say AU-58.

as low as AU58 or as high as MS63. lighting in photos is not helping. once these get into circulation, even for a short time, they normally pick up a lot of nicks so I'm leaning somewhere around MS62

Gold is tough but I'll say MS-62.

One of the better reverse strikes that I've seen on those in a while. But yeah, some hits on the obverse. MS 62.

Bummer. Always risky to buy raw gold coins. Is 3 months too late to return it to the LCS?
