Poll Question
I'm seeking a little input from the numismatist off the street. I have two 1851 large cents to fill the last LC hole in my 7070. One is of a nice grade but with damage around the rim. It is otherwise a nice coin. The other is a more worn and circulated grade but otherwise problem free with no apparent damage. What would you put in the album?

Depends on what grade the coins next to it are, I suspect.
That said, I, personally, have little problem with rim damage, and think that 1850s large cents tend to get really ugly below VG or so (the design just seems to wear out in a particularly ugly way), so I would probably have gone with the higher-grade coin. But I also prefer the Petite Head subtype, so would not have put an 1851 there anyway.

Look at my 7070 (link in the signature) and guess how I voted.

First option is on the left, 2nd is on the right.

Now I understand the dilemma. The one on the left might not look as bad once it is in the album, but I am inclined to go with he one on the right. In the end you have to be happy with it. Would it bug you knowing the damage is there?

I voted the higher grade damage one, now the votes are even.

The even split in the poll tells me there is no wrong answer and this is ultimately a personal choice.

I would probably skip both. I would rather have a details coin if it's visually pleasing that 1851 with the rim ding isn't as nice. I guess if these where the only 2 choices I would take the worn one.

Typically I would say problem free, lower grade. In this case I would probably go with the higher grade, but only as a filler.
When purchasing specifically for an album, I would always hold off to get a problem free coin, in the highest grade budget will allow. In this case, since you own both, pick whichever you prefer!

best option would probably be to sell them both and buy a better one

I voted for the higher grade since the album page should lessen the distraction of the rim. Or so it does with Air-tite rings, which are similar in concept.

Normally I'd go with a little lower grade coin that is problem free. However, in this case, the difference is enough that I voted for the higher grade coin with damage. Case by case...

I would insert the best I could afford AND the coin that best shows what the Mint had in mind when they designed it.
