OK...Variety Vista says the following Kennedy half variety is a legit DDR:

1974-D DDR-001, 1-R-II-C+VI
The pics are below and here is the link:
http://www.varietyvista.com/12%20Ke...4DDDR001.htm

I see flat, shelf-like "steps," plus decreasing of device sizes. I certainly do not understand how this is a legit DDR and seeking an education about it.

What is it I do not see/know?

That is Machine Doubling, if you read the markers at the bottom it is one thing to look for in an Eds of this DDR.

The stars are doubled without mdd

You can also see the doubling in America easier in the mds

The coin pictured has both strong Machine Doubling and a minor DDR. The DDR is more noticeable on the stars but you can also see minor split serifs on the bottoms of the letters in AMERICA.

As Gincoin pointed as well, the MDD is noted in the Stage A die markers.

Thanks. I should have looked at the later die stage pics as well where there is no MD.

It's quite a minor DD. On the pictures provided you can see a split on the E but the stars are really what is visible. I doubt I'd even notice if I had this DD in hand.
