I'm not sure if this is an error, but I do think it's strange how the letters that are worn off sit lower than the edges.

to CCF. I do not think it is a mint error. I think it is circulation wear. It may have started out with a Grease Filled Die issue, and it may have gotten damaged during its' early life and now has worn to what you now have. John1

I agree just honest, heavy circulation wear.

to the CCF! As noted, it's just circulation wear on this 101 year old coin. You have to wonder how many times this coin was spent and returned over the years!
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

I would look the same, probably worse at 101 years old.

Coin doesn't look smooth. Could the coin have been eaten by some corrosion and then cleaned?

I haven't figured out how to reply to individual replies, but I thank you all for your input. Especially the one about us looking that bad after 101 years! I can only hope I look as decent as this 1909 if I reach 101!

Heavy circulation wear--not uncommon. I have many tubes of teen and 20s wheat cents having a very similar look.
