I have quite a few coins, several weird ones, but this one is my favorite. The edges are quite a bit higher than the center, and it's not at all smooth.

A well-damaged coin. May have had a romp in some acid in the past. Can't rule out exposure to blistering heat too. All happening after the coin was struck--almost certainly after it left the mint

I don't have the best camera, but I can take more pictures if you'd like. I'll have to get it back out of the box, so let me know.

I do appreciate all of your input! Coins absolutely fascinate me, and I've had questions about several of the ones I have for years, so it's nice to have a place to discuss them!

Quote: it's nice to have a place to discuss them! We are glad you are here! I agree with @ijn that the textured surface suggests previous acid exposure (knowing if it is underweight would help to confirm). We see flaring of the rims on coins that are spooned or are Dryer Coins. In that case, the diameter is likely a little under spec too.

Looks also acid dipped as well. Note the pock marks on the coin on all sides.

It very much does look like an acid trip now I've seen that penny there! The diameter is a bit smaller than other nickels, but sadly I don't have a way to weigh it. Thank you all!

But it was spooned before the surfaces were damaged. Spooning would have wiped out the damage on the edge.

Dryer coin. I have a quarter very similar to that.

I dunno about acid, but it's been rolled around on it's edge for quite some time, and possibly some bleach, like at a a laundromat. the edge ahs that beveled "spooned" appearance to it. Dryer Coin that's seen some laundry chemicals also for a while?
