I was thinking about this the other day and thought I would see what you all thought. If someone gave you $100 or $250 or $500 that MUST be spent on coins. What would you buy or are interested in now? What would you recommend someone new to coins buy? My $100: Trade dollar (really liked the history of this coin and would be a cool addition to the collection). My $250: Morgan dollar Carson City (don't have one and would like to add one) My $500: $5 Gold Indian Head (I've been interested in lately) I have no advice for someone else, but am curious what you all would do for yourselves or advice for others? Now to find someone to give me the coin money...

A Seated Liberty dollar with better details. I have an 1872 I JUST got in a trade and am THRILLED with it - wanted one for 40+ years and finally got one. But having it in hand I am thinking I want one with great detail.

$100: An opportunistic well bought coin at a low price, at a coin show or public auction, across the whole of numismatics. $200: Same. $500: Same, up to an partially open ended limit of perhaps $2,000.
Nearly similar policy to what a coin dealer would do, except that I am a collector, not a numismatic investor or a trader. After a very close examination in hand, and partially because of the price opportunity, the coin would have to scream: "Buy me!"
Have been buying like this for 40 years or more. World history since the invention of coinage, and illustrating that with actual coins has been my has been a major interest for all of that time.

For $100 I'd be looking towards a FBL Franklin (my favorite coin). $250 I'd turn to the commemoratives and lean towards a nice Texas, Lincoln, or Bay bridge, something along those lines. (I really like the Oregon Trail half, but I've already got a beautiful example of one). And for $500 I'd stay with the commems and go with perhaps a Grant or California half. After all that, if I had any money left over, I'd swing by Costco and get one of those great hot dogs they sell.

Quote: What would you buy or are interested in now? $100 - A PCGS slabbed Ike for the extended set. Likely the 1990 or 2013 commemorative dollars or possibly a higher grade 1972 variety 3. $200 - This would buy me the 1972 variety 2 Ike, for sure. I found one I want and it is $200, but not really in the budget right now. $500 - This would buy one of the six remaining coins to complete my original Dansco albums: 1877 and 1909-S IHC, 1909-S VDB and 1922 "Plain" LWC, 1916-D dime, and Seated dollar with Motto for the 7070. Quote: What would you recommend someone new to coins buy? Not sure. I would need to know more about the collector. Quote: Now to find someone to give me the coin money...

$100 - a box of nickels $250 - a box of dimes $500 - a box of quarters
Whatever I don't want to keep I'll turn in and put in my bank account for more boxes to look through.

I knew something was amiss when you said that.

I'll make a wild guess the seller is decimal challenged (looks like his or her first time on ebay).

I pretty much spend $100 a week on coins and sometimes $200 anyway. Are we talking $100 American or $100 New Zealand Pesos?
Assuming American
$100 - 1953 NZ Prood set with no flaws $250 - An AU or Uncirculated Australian, 1934/35 Victoria Centenary Florin $500 - An Uncirculated UK Halfcrown of the 1820s

I was wondering when we would see another list without U.S. coins. I never answered "What would I recommend someone new to coins to buy?" At $100 I recommend buying a multi-century world coin lot, and then enjoying the research involved in identifying the coins. At $200 I recommend doing the same with an ancient coin lot. At $500 I recommend buying a lot that contains nicer 19th century U.S. type coins.
