Hopefully I have no issues uploading photos for this but I am currently in the process of documenting a 1958 Doubled Die Obverse I recently found and thought I would share it with the forum.

Here, you see the "GRA" of "GRATIA"

if you look on the bottom right of the "G" you will see a notch. In the same locations on the "R" and "A" you will also see notches, this is not what a normal obverse legend is suppose to look like.

Here is "DEI" and if you look on the bottom right of the "I" there is also a notch, all of the letters "I" in the legend have this same notch.

Close ups of some of the letters.

"I" in "DEI" again

"R" in "GRATIA"

"A" in "GRATIA", all of the letters "A" in the legend also have the same notches.

If you compare these with another 1958 nickel you will notice that they do not look the same, not only is there notching on almost all of the letters on the obverse, you will also notice that the devices are also a lot thicker than that of a normal 1958 5 cent nickel.

I believe I may have found one of these before.

A family friend had a small (ziploc bag) coin collection that I was asked to look at and see if he had anything good. There were a number of Canadian coins in the bag and I believe I found a 1958 DDO like this one as well as a 1967 quarter DDR. Unfortunately, as these were not my coins, I was not able to keep or photograph the two doubled dies I found. I made a list of all the coins that were in the bag, and noted that I was interested in the two coins because they were doubled dies, and gave the coins and the list back. I have not yet heard back from him.

Nice find though! And good pics.

Thank you for the reply Tanman2001, I corrected the post from discovered to found.

If you ever hear back from him you should see about getting some photographs done if at all possible, I would love to see it. I couldent find anything online at all for 1958 DDO's so it would be interesting to see what you come up with if you can get it in hand again, keep me posted!

Thank you for the link John1, I have seen that page a few times but it only shows the "Double 8" and nothing regarding a DDO.

The best way to have the coin listed on CoinsAndCanada is to post your coin at their Discussion Board.

It can take some times to be listed here

But if you ask directly to the Administrator, that will be faster.

I did that many time over the pas few years. That answers were always good.

Thank you John1 and SP67, I will reach out to Coins and Canada through instagram. I speak to them from time to time on there regarding previous finds they have been interested in. Tanman2001, I will also let them know it was you who originally discovered it and I found and photographed this later example confirming your discovery.

I really have no way of knowing if the coin I saw a month ago is the same die as your coin until I get it back to take pics (which could take a while). Honestly, I'm fine with you taking the credit. If it happens to be a different die, that'll suck for everyone.

Tanman2001, fair enough.

I woulden't be too surprised at this point if there was more than one different DDO for 1958, it seems like most of the doubled dies I have been finding lately end up having more than one version per year and this is why (if possible) I would like to see the one you found if you manage to get it in hand again.

Last night I managed to stumble accross a 1957 Bug Tail with the exact same doubled die obverse as the 1958 shown in this post, once I'm done building my new lens for my camera I will post photos of it. Should be done later this afternoon, my old lens is great, but my new one I'm making should get me a bit closer so I'm able to show details more clearly.
