Posting a bit early. Not sure I'll be able to pick it up for VF25 money but we'll see. Really like the eye appeal on this one. I agree with the VF30/35 group, although there really isn't a price jump until XF40.

if they found the scratches were made intentionally they would have detailed the coin. the scratch going left to right appears to have been made quite a bit later as attested by the lighter color and therefore determined it was probably a scratch that wasnt that detracting and was not made on purpose. I agree

I'm really surprised and disappointed at the grade.

Looks undergraded to me, but a very attractive coin regardless.

The strong patina in the fields shows how effective they can be at hiding significant nicks and scratches.
This coin may have not straight graded on a white AU coin.

Put me down for VF-30 straight. Great looking coin!

Unless it's been silently net-graded down to 25 it is undergraded. It's at least a VF30 with conservative grading.

Sold for $276.00. Had to resist the urge to keep bidding , really liked this one. I'm not one to pay over retail though.

Scratches (intentional or otherwise) don't automatically detail a coin. Key factors are the location of the scratches, recency/age of the scratches, and whether toning makes the scratches less noticeable. On this coin, the scratches are on the reverse, and do not harm visual appeal of a device. The scratches are older, and well toned.

It's at least nice to see NGC undergrading coins as apposed to overgrading the for a change.

They probably market graded the coin. The coin does exhibit VF type wear except the cloth at the bust which is nicely detailed and where I could see it getting a choice VF grade if it weren't for those scratches.

I'd agree with VF-30 straight for this coin. However the scratches would greatly bother me as a collector. No way I'd pay near VF-30 retail. I've seen prettier coins then this one get details grades, perhaps if re-submitted this one would too.

All of this reminds me of what a bozo I am at grading Bust halves, but I still think this rates higher than VF-25. I think it's a killer coin despite minor reverse issues.
