Hello! I am new here but it seems like a great site! I've found many of the decorative reproduction Chinese coins, but this one looks and feels different than those. It's thick and the hole is weird. It almost looks like 3 coins stuck together but I don't know! I included two pics of the rougher side because it's hard to make out anything really. Any help appreciated! Edit: Assuming it is 3 coins stuck together, should I try and separate the coins? And what would be the best way to do this? Thanks! Edited by Tectey 09/01/2020 12:26 am

Are there four characters on both sides?

Yes, however, I'm really starting to think it might be three coins stuck together, so hard to say! It is over 3 mm thick, and if you look through the center, you can see that one of the coins is not quite lined up with the others.

Could be worthwhile to carefully split them to try to ID, unless you want to keep it as a novelty.

Thanks! That was going to be my next question...if/how to try and separate?

Try placing the coins on edge and gently tap a thin knife blade to separate. Or something else with a thin sharp edge. Work carefully and slowly- not too harsh.

@tec, first welcome to CCF. Second, with the square holes not lined up, I definitely agree that this is multiple Chinese cast cash corroded together. Honestly, I would not separate them but I think that @albert's advice is solid if that is the path you want to walk down.

If you want to separate corroded metal, start with penetrating oil. Let them soak and be patient. WD-40 is a widely available but there are others that are more effective. Gibb's Lube is excellent.

I didn't think of oil- but yes try it. I'd use a special "penetrating oil" found in auto and hardware stores. Specially made to weep into stuck or rusted nuts & bolts. A good soaking and gentle tap may separate the coins.
