I have a MS61 PCGS 1905 Liberty head double eagle and I have been thinking that I might try resubmitting it to NGC. To me it looks like a mid to upper end 61 but I have thought that about other coins that I subbed to NGC and they came back higher than what I thought they would. This happened with my 1914 Indian head quarter eagle. To me it looked like a MS60 or maybe a 61 but it came back a 62. I really like the new NGC slabs and I would like the coin slabbed in one. I'm not to fond of PCGS slabs but I guess that just an opinion and preference..lol. Anyhow let me know what you guys think about the 1905. I will list pictures below for you to take a look at.

Have you considered sending it to CAC to see if they sticker it?

I actually have thought about it but I wanted to get others opinions on the grade before I did anything

It looks pretty baggy, with some deeper hits as well. It sure does have nice luster though. If you really want to try maybe send it to PCGS in the holder and see what they say. It would be a great score if it did! I just would not crack it out.

Lots of cheek chatter, so not likely to get a 63, but possibly a 62. Problem is the disappointment you would have if you send it in, pay the fees, etc and it doesn't go up a grade.

Or even worse, they decide it's MS-60 or AU-58.

This is a scarce coin in mint state and will be worth quite a bit more if it does score an MS-62. For the potential value increase it might be worth re-submitting more than once. Maybe you should start slow and just send it to NGC for a crossover, with minimum MS-61 grade. They might decide it's worth that MS-62 in which case you are a big winner. If it stays a '61 you can then decide if you want to risk the crack-out and take the chance it could down-grade.

For what it's worth, it does look solid for MS-61 and possible for MS-62. I think the grading services would be well aware of the price jump for the next grade on this coin and might be reluctant to give it that '62.

Good luck!

thanks for the input on the coin. I think I might submit it as a crossover to NGC and see what happens. I actually have a few other coins that I know will grade higher (they are in the older green holders from PCGS and most of them are graded 1 to 2 points lower) It is a really nice MS61 1905 IMO and I think its worth the bit of extra cash to try it with the other bunch :)
