My FE/IHC collection I keep in an old Whittman book from the late 1950's my grandpa gave me (the book). I recently bought an 1872 IHC graded VG in a NGC slab because it was a good price. But I really want to crack the slab to fill the empty spot in the book. At this point I'm more interested in filling the spots than I am improving the whole set. Is it appropriate to crack a slab? What would you do? BTW, I love this old book. My grandfather had written the date and the price of each FE/IHC as he filled their spot. It's interesting to see what these things cost in 1955. To be clear, this book is an album (where you can see both sides of coin) and not a folder, right? If the former, then crack away! Regardless, the book sounds priceless.

I agree, go for it. A slab is not really a value factor for an 1872 Indian cent in VG.

The book is a folder with plastic/acetate slides. Only one side of the coins is visable. My grandfather passed away in 1969, and he got me started in coin collecting, so this book means a lot to me. I do have a brand new Whittman albumn but its hard to let go of the keepsake folder. He had a collection of UNC IHC. He bought his 1872 IHC in 1955 for $3.00.

I hate slabbed coins. Regardless of what you do with that slab, crack out the coin. Purchase an Album and make those coins look great.

I don't think there's any question that you should bust it out and fill that hole. Grandpa would approve! Write the date and price like he did.

I'm VERY pro-slab. Any coin of significance that I have is in a slab. But an 1872 IHC slabbed in VG doesn't need to remain in a slab if it's got "friends" in an album. Crack it out and let it join the others.

Thanks y'all. I was wondering who would slab a VG 1872. I could see slabbing an 1877 VG. I'll take a photo soon of this old IHC folder/albumn. I also have matching folders/albumns for the Roosevelt dime and the Washington quarter.

Hi all, I misspoke about the brand of coin album. It's a Wayte Raymond album. T-Bop, I'm sure he had at least one 1955 P double die. I recall that his Lincoln collection was complete except for the 1909-S vdb. Most of grampa's collection went to my uncle, my mom got the house and property.
