Hello all,
Here's an ungraded NFLD 5c that appears to be well into mint state territory. I'm interested but hesitating because I have limited experience with George V. Curious to know what everyone's take is. The seller (a solid guy - US-based) is asking a fairly high price but thinks this is MS-64 or even 65 in which case it might be worth it.

Any opinions out there?

larger pictures needed to even determine MS, let alone 64 or 65

I'm going to ask for some more photos - really none of them are quite sufficient for the key distinction. Starting price is 650 USD. It sounds crazy but, as I say, this is a guy who has never steered me wrong previously. I purchased an outstanding 1873 5c obv 2 recently, VF-25 or so, for a very reasonable price. So I'm taking this seriously.....

It's clearly up there - I think the pictures are good enough to put it safely into AU territory but there's no easy way to assess the surfaces, eye appeal and fine structure detail needed to make a call of MS. I'll report back with more pictures when/if I can get any.

Parenthetically, it's not a scarce coin by any measure. I actually have one with exactly the same die crack that's at around AEV. 300,000 were minted and are lots on ebay in the VF, EF and AU range. This is only worth exploring (in my books anyway) if it's well into mint state. Anyway, thanks and stay tuned (if you're interested!)

Thanks @doubleeagle - is that based on the appearance of the surfaces? The guy who is selling is positively rhapsodic about this coin....

At the lowest I would say AU-58, so if you can get it for AU money is buy it.

I'll keep you posted - expecting it in the mail this week! At this point it's all in the surfaces and those are difficult to judge if you don't have the coin in hand....

Probably low MS. A gamble based on those photos.
