Not my area but may be a replica of Alexander the Great (Ancient Greece). Well made replicas sell for about $15 to $65.

@jc, I've moved your thread over to the ancients section of CCF so that we can get some good eyeballs on it. Can you please also post the weight and diameter of this piece? Thx.

It's a documented fake of a tetradrachm of Antiochos IV.

Seleukid Kingdom Antiochoas IV Epiphanes 175-164 BC. tetradrachm Sear# 6977-6979. The coin appears genuine to me. But if not an excellent fake.

Your friend can insist all he wants to. However, it is a pressed fake from modern dies, is well documented in the fake reports, and was published in the IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 22, No.1 1997.

I get lazy when it comes to checking the fake reports, but if Bob says it's fake you can take that to the bank.

I looked at the pictures and considered, before reading any of the subsequent posts.
The 'gut' feeling was "fake".
After reading Bob L's posts, that feeling was justified.

To my eye, the fields just looked too smooth for an ancient coin, and it looks to have been artificially patinated, then finished with a black wax rubbing.
May have a silver plated copper core, but also possible, may have been made in good silver. XRF test may be helpful, but not conclusive.

Is this coin of constant thickness between the fields?
