Hello Friends, I'm looking at this 1879 Trade dollar that I think is a fake because the obverse is type 1. Do you agree that this is counterfeit. I value your insights. Thanks!

Well as you say the obv is type one which is good enough right there to say it is fake. Then you have the date being bad, and the weak/missing dentils, and finally the fact that this is a proof only issue and it definitely doesn't look like a proof to me.....

This is a base-metal, Chinese fake. This particular type has been floating around in quantity since the early 2000s.

Thanks so much All !!! I appreciate the help so much. I'm pretty sure I'm going to feel at home here and I'm so impressed by the depth of knowledge and experience represented in these forms. Good News ! I purchased the coin from a guy on Mercari and 3 days had passed since I received the coin, so per their rules I had "accepted it". Of Course, the seller didn't reply to any of my messages. So I opened a case on the Mercari site. Their first response was that they didn't think that they could help me because it had been more than 3 days, but to send them some pictures of what I was talking about. I sent pictures of the coin and sent a link to the coin community Trade dollar Counterfeit page. I also didn't call the coin a "fake" like I did in the first message to them, this time I called it "Illegal, counterfeit US Currency" :) To their credit, within 8 hours they credited my account with the amount I paid for the coin.

@wafflecom, glad it worked out for you! Couple bits of advice. Never heard of Mercari so I just checked it out. I would say avoid that site. All I could find was overpriced commons, copies, and fakes/ counterfeits. IMO. Also, for future purchases, feel free to post a pic before buying. Everyone on here is more than happy to help!

Mercari, Poshmark, Etsy, etc. are some of the worst places to look for coins. Like Ty said, if in doubt, post it on CCF to get opinions before you buy.

I agree, stay away from Mercari and Etsy and the like. Use trusted sites like Heritage or PCGS.

When it comes to Trades, save yourself a lot of headache and get ONLY slabbed coins. Unless you have a VERY trusted source, that is going to be your best bet

Quote: Unless you have a VERY trusted source Agreed. That was the only way I was able to get a raw Trade dollar for my 7070.
