Just picked this up the other day. I think it is a VAM 9. Is that correct? Also grade if you like. I am in the opinion that it is ....

wwhitman,

That's a beauty! I looked for some of the key diagnostics for the VAM 9 and couldn't see them from the photos ... broken 4th right star point, 'r' in trust broken, and die flakes above E P and B. I do see the broken bottom crossbar in B and what appears to be an engraved wing feather. If you can confirm the first three with the coin in hand, you probably have a VAM 9. If that star point is not broken, it isn't a VAM 9.

ww, I agree with Not Super, pictures aren't giving enough detail to make a call. If you could post some close up pictures of the areas Dave mentioned, it would help a great deal. A close up of the mintmark area and r in trust also please.

wwhitman,

Check your coin against the diagnostics for the VAM 48 ... see if it has the diagonal die scratch right of wreath bow.

This is a prooflike coin, very nice.I also have never seen an 1878-s with an intact 4th right star.I see a close date, also a partially broken r in trust.I am not a pro, however could this be a EDS of this die used for the obv on the proofs?

ww, could you get me one more close up ? I would like to see the area between the upper two leaf clusters on the left wreath.

Dave, correct me if you think I'm wrong, but I believe this coin shows the smaller S mintmark, where the VAM 48 has the larger, more open mintmark.

Mike, very doubtful, proofs were minted in Philly.

MorgansRmine,

I did a side-by-side and they look about the same size, but wwhitman's doesn't have the tilt to the right.

Here are the leaf clusters on left.
Is that okay?
I tend to agree with SeatedNut. The 'S' does not seem to be tilted.

I don't see a die crack in that area.

Yea Mike, something just don't look kosher under the first set of wreath leaves, but pictures aren't clear enough to tell. The VAM with the die gouge occurs under the second set of leaves and that area appears normal.

ww, I've eliminated 69 out of 109, check your coin with VAM 83 on Vamworld and let us know how it fares.
