The devices tend to move towards the rim direction. The devices on that area also look smaller because the die was polished. When the fields are removed, then the devices get thinner:

Note the die is polished, the coins devices are smaller and shorter in height. Note the shadow on the last image? This is a proof coin. So the shadow areas outside of the devices, is called flat field doubling. Proof coins are struck twice. So If Machine Doubling happens on the first strike, it can be flatted into the fields on the second strike. (Also note the second strike was also Machine Doubling.
