Is it normal for a 1973 Lincoln Cent to have a Close AM? The FG is close to the side of monument which is one way of checking that this should be Wide AM.

Normal reverse for that year. It's also the only year the mint used that style of the FG initials at the bottom right of the memorial.

Compare your FG to 1972 and 1974 for a surprise.
(And it's not because it's wide.)

I THOUGHT THAT FROM 1959 -1992
ALL PENNIES HAD A Wide AM ACCORDING TO ALOT OF POSTS IN THESE FORUMS.
SO EITHER MR. JULIUSOLIS OR ME HAVE AN ERROR COIN. SO WHO IS IT.
WE BOTH CANT HAVE A REGULAR COIN FOR THAT YEAR BUT BE MINTED DIFFERENT.
BOTH COINS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION NOT BEAT UP ENOUGH SO TO BE CALLED AFTER MINT DAMAGE.
SET IT STRAIGHT. THE Close AM EXCEPTIONS FOR THE 1973 PENNY HAS NEVER COME UP IN ANY POSTING. THEY ALL SAY ACROSS THE BOARD FROM 1959-1992 ALL Wide AM. SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT.

Normal 1973 Cent has the Wide AM. The concept was not added until 1992 for the 1993 cents. (Some were used on the 1992 creating a year variety for 1992.

Both coins are normal. There are a lot of variables that can affect how different areas of the coin look. Die wear, how deeply the die was pressed originally, die polishing, wear on the coin itself. On the original poster's coin, it looks to me like some Die Deterioration caused the letters to spread out a bit.
