Struck through a capped die, preventing the devices to come through. What dies a die cap look like? Sometimes more than one planchet sticks on the die: Your coin is not a die cap, but it was struck through a die cap. Note on the above image the reverse side of the cap. Note that some of the design is still on cap. That would transfer to coin. But on your coin, it is a late stage die cap, where the design is now flattened. They have a modest premium. But this is not a damaged coin, but a mint error.

That's an amazing coin. Struck through Capped die quarters are rare on their own, but on the reverse that's a pretty scarce find. Awesome coin!

to the CCF! I don't see any tapering at the rims of the coin or tell tale distortion and smearing of the devices. I would think it was Struck Through Grease and not a capped die. I could be totally wrong, but that's my guess. Still a wonderful error!

I'm going with Yokozuna on this one. I was under the impression also that one of the ways to tell the difference between Grease Filled Dies and die caps is the nature of the rim, with the presence of a strong rim indicating Grease Filled Dies were the cause. I've been wrong a few times today already, so one more time is no big deal . . .

Good question. Here is a side by side with a normal quarter: Seems like we should see more of the obverse design if it were a capped die. Here is a dime similar to this example: _imag.jpg) But don't have a quarter struck through a capped die. (jury is still out on this yet)

quarter millimeter of silver metallic paint brushed on it in my opinion, oh yes, Ima be "that guy" today! Just kidding! nahhh, ya know what, I'm gonna be this guy instead. http://goccf.com/t/383917Start to connect the dots between this threads quarter, the one in the below link and that there was likely a 3rd involved and a piece of leather and some pounding. of call it a Struck Through Grease or capped die strike if you like... LOL! there's a story being told here with these two coins.
