It starting to seem that a lot of Canadian coins have been cleaned one time or another, some are harsh cleaning and others are lightly cleaned and don't really look out of place but still altered somewhat.

My question would relate to the later (light cleaning) how should this reflect to the pricing of a coin % wise to trend value of same coin for grade and or variety.
Or would a person drop a few grades to compensate for value?

Mild clean % ?
Harsh clean % ?

Some coins are very few in varieties it would be interesting to hear your views feel free to reply all reply's will be greatly appreciated.

I think only obvious cleanings should detract from value.

However, the answer is really a formula of the collectors (willingness to look beyond the cleaning) factored by (the rarity of the coin).

Light cleaned, circulated Victorian coins will often get holdered by all of the TPGs. I think that is the rule, more than the exception. Regarding price, I think original coins sometimes go for premiums, rather than lightly cleaned coins going for less.

Coins with problems are 'details' coins.
'Details' can take many forms:
-cleaning
-corrosion
-post mint damage
-poor eye appeal toning
-poor die strike

The way I see it, you don't drop the grade, you drop the value.

With a 'details' coin, the value is very much in the eye of a prospective buyer, and can exert considerable downwards leverage in the price negotiations.

Depending on how severe the 'detail' is,
the price is perceived by most to be anywhere between 50% to as low as 10% of what a no 'details' coin may be.

My working numbers are:
-- Mild clean - 50% at best
-- Harsh clean - 30% at best

The more desirable the coin, the closer to my suggested percentages they are.
