I am looking for information on what the crescent is on the left side of the obverse. It fully engulfs the "L" and engulfs most of the "IN".

@joe, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @john1 about the Ridge Ring and would add that the lightly struck ES of STATES on the rev is due to the metal flowing into the base of Abe's bust. If some other area was lightly struck then that might be due to a grease-filled die.
