Ran across this searching a box of quarters. Nothing too out of the ordinary and its not in great condition, but it is unlisted on Cuds-On-Coins. Evidence of marginal displacement on the 1 in the date. It is a shame circulation damage has eroded any attempt at determining depth at the center of the crack on obverse. Unable to determine other point on the rim on reverse. For now, ill just call it a die crack.

IMO the most interesting thing of all this are the two "no dates" listed under the pre Cuds. They dont match this coin exactly but the two locations (obverse + reverse) of the cracks are close. Maybe a few of the 1998 dies failed in a near identical fashion?

Just die cracks. The central design makes the die form a lot in the center and and flexes the die, making die cracks in certain areas. Reminds me of a Problem Linus from 'Peanuts" had:

Coop, just curious but does an existing full-fledged die break need to exist for there to be a classification of "pre Cud" aka die crack. Or does the area, style & shape of crack, and location play a more dominant role in the determination between the two?

Maybe it was superficial thinking on my part for assuming the later of the two. That is, an arcing rim-to-rim die crack (RRDC) is a pre Cud. And an irregular crack that does not touch two points on the rim, is just a normal die crack.

By the way I chuckled at the cartoon. Definitely relevant.

A Retained Cud will show a moving of the devices that show it is still attached to the die, but has not broken off yet to form a Cud:

Often the Retained Cud on the reverse dies, keeps striking many coins as the collar prevents it from spliting off. But eventually it breaks off a the void is opened and now Cuds appear on the coins because the void opening.

The hammer dies will have more Cuds on the older style multi hubbed coins. But the anvil dies have less because of the collar holding the die together.

Dual Cud:

On on each side of the coin. Note the weakness opposite the Cuds on the other side? That confirms that this is a Cud and not just something that was added to the coin. So look for the weakness opposite of the Cuds:
