I came across this Wheat cent CRH and was wondering if this is a skull crack or lamination issue because it seems to be larger and cover more area than regular skull crack cent?
Thanks for your input.

I'll say an incipient lamination. Coin appears to have been cleaned.

I like it! Cracked skull and cool toning--even if human influenced (possibly). Very 2x2 worthy.

Thanks guys. And yes am guilty of using acetone and a Qtip to remove some built up gunk. Which I understand is not recommended but it did make the lamination more visual.
Also given the fact that it will only make it so far as a personal 2 x 2 holder I figured what is the harm..

I'm leaning towards a retained interior die break because of the way it curves around the top of the head. Lam's usually flow in straight lines.

And by the way, acetone is a perfectly acceptable conservation tool for your Lincoln. Whatever evidence of cleaning is present wasn't put there by your acetone treatment.

Agree with RIDB. '53 S cents can have a plethora of interesting issues. I have several '53 S cracked skulls. Very cool.

It is a Retain internal die break. What is the differences between a die crack and a die break?
1953-D-LWC-Skull-Crack-Or-Lam
Note the image on the left on the back image? That is a die crack. But as the crack continues to get deeper into the die, the more the die surface crumbles, erodes away. When more of the die material breaks away and falls off the die, the more the metal goes away. When it get to a certain point, the continued striking makes a void along with the die crack. This is often seen as a ring around a certain area making if look like to us like it could break away. But keep in mint that this is developing a post and doesn't break away, but just keeps enlarging with continued use of this die. These are so common on the 1950's wheat cents that most don't give them much attention and are not a premium on this area. The more interest are on the reverse die cracks/breaks/retained Cuds and Cuds. I don't recall seeing one of these break away or distort the on the obverse. But you never know, someday some one will probably post one. So stay tuned in here to see if it shows up.
