the 80(P) have average to above average strikes. this one I would say is average, maybe a tad light on the breast and ear area. luster is broken across both sides, eye appeal is average. surface preservation is not quite there for a MS64 coin with multiple hits, marks & abrasions and field scuffs on both sides. I have this one at MS63 just short of 64

I sure wouldn't argue with a details designation here.

It's one ugly coin. It would be a hard pass for me on a bourse floor, regardless of the slab. It's a common date below MS-65, and there wouldn't be any reason to settle for one this ugly. It's basically slabbed shrapnel.

The discoloration around IGWT is a pretty clear indication of circulation wear. I'd grade it AU-55, maybe 58 if luster in-hand is stronger than what the pictures show.

This is a VERY non-expert observation, but I'd have said AU Details—cleaned. I think I see a lot of tiny parallel scratches in the fields, esp. near US in PLURIBUS and around the eagle on the reverse.

I see a small amount of rim chatter (on the cheek, for example) and some deeper scratches in the hair and across the eagle's breast; if this is MS I don't think it would rise above 64. It doesn't look like there's a ton of wear, but I'm also not seeing a lot of luster which, to me, suggests it's been dipped/cleaned as well (but I've seen photos of coins that look "flattened" like this that have a TON of luster in hand, so sometimes it's the lighting/photography).

Set me straight. What am I missing?

I whiffed on this one. I'll quietly slink off and get my eyes checked now.
