I found a 1952-D Wheat penny with the D over S error but it also looks like there is a sideways 2 over 2 also. I can't find any information about the 2 over 2 and wondered if anyone else has seen anything like it?

Just out of curiosity, can you post a couple pics of the whole coin? I'm interested in replies about the 2 over 2, D/S.

@bjack, first welcome to CCF. Second, I'm not sure how that would happen as the numbers of the date are not punched by hand. More likely is very small chips on the die, circulation damage, and some accumulated grime.

I agree as well. Don't see how a 2 could physically be turned sideways, knowing how the process works. I agree with Spence, it's probably some very small die chips and dirt and/or grime that has accumulated over the years. I'd need a closer photo to be able to see a D over S.

to the CCF!

Looks like grime is the crime on this one. I feel after it is gone, all questions will be answered. There was nothing there, thus a cover up of the coin. Mineral oil treatment and a soft brush will help show us what is/isn't there under the grime.

This is to be used only on circulated coins with grime around the devices. Use a green thorn to loosen attached grime. Keep in mind that the grime may have sand in it and pressing downward on the sand can leave scratches. So work the grime out by flicking it away from the devices, not brushing it into the fields, because it could result in damage when rubbed into the fields.

I agree with coop... his method for removing the grime would require a careful eye and skilled hand. Personally, I dislike the very idea of any sort of cleaning coins, but I do see how/why it could sometimes be beneficial if done correctly (I just won't be the one doing it).

I carefully cleaned it with a toothbrush and mineral oil. Here's the results.
