I wanted to upgrade my Rosie for a bit and ended up snagging this one very low. Greysheet is $70 and I got it for $40 so a great deal on my end. I like this one for a few reasons, the primary of which is the nice original toning. While I do like colorful and crazy toners, I don't really like them on dimes for whatever reason, so this one spoke to me. Thoughts?

Hmmmm, original toning or environmental damage? It didn't come from the mint like that, did it?

Quote: original toning or environmental damage No it didn't, but yes it is original toning. I'm not gonna get in the whole "AlL tOnInG iS eNvIrOmEnTaL dAmAg3" debate for the 400th time.

I get your points. We've all been there with this toning vs. damage thing, I get it. Just giving you guys a hard time. Yes, I get the whole original toning thing. It happened naturally, without any direct "human" intervention. But (my only point) the "environment" (whatever environment your coin was in) "did" create that natural toning.... correct? I recently made a statement on another thread..............mother-nature is taking it back. Hey BTW Grapes, it's a good looking dime today. Nice pick up! ! I just wish I had your financial wherewithal to buy coins when I was your age!

Very nice! A long time ago, I remember an oldtimer telling me that toning is actually a natural protective shield of sorts. I guess what it means is that this dime will most likely stay like this if it doesn't get any further exposure to the outside elements.

Yep, my educated guess is this coin was in a mint set or album, though I lean towards the latter. Quote: Just giving you guys a hard time. Hey BTW Grapes, it's a good looking dime today. Though I'm a blast white kind of guy , I do like this dime . It doesn't exhibit that harsh Mickey Mouse color, but nice subtle light blend .

Well, technically toning is environmental "damage" since it permanently alters the original surfaces. But this kind of alleged "damage" I will gladly accept every time! Nice example!

Quote: It doesn't exhibit that harsh Mickey Mouse color, but nice subtle light blend That's something I've found about myself as this set has progressed, while I think psychedelic toners are cool I think I've come to prefer toning that highlights instead of overpowers. I think there's a line between toning being on a coin and a coin being under toning.

Quote:Well, technically toning is environmental "damage" since it permanently alters the original surfaces. We all know there are many folks here (not me) that have very strong feelings and opinions about toning. If you (or anyone) are on the side of those who call it damaged and the other side does not call it damaged, what's the opposite of damage? Here are some opposite words for damage: Rebuilding, reconstruction, renewal, rejuvenation, restoration, reform, development, upgrading, renovation, transformation, re-establishment, refurbishment, enhancement. Many would say that Grape's coin is one or more of the above.
