I see Numista has a 1981 5c mule (NZ Obverse, Canadian Reverse). Try as I might, I cannot find any more info on this beastie, not even pictures. Can Princetane or another knowledgeable being shed some light on this coin?
Thanks

My Bertrand NZ catalogue, says the coin exists and is extremely rare - no sales known. Can't see any pictures of it.

Interested to know which Canadian denomination it would have the obverse from, I am thinking the penny as the 5 cent coin was 19.1mm in size, a Canadian Nickel is 21.2mm and Dime is 17.8mm, so the Penny at 19.5mm seems logical.

If one came in the wild, it would be like a 6 or 7 figure coin. 1980 - 1983 NZ coinage for circulation was actually struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa and that could be why it happened.

Thanks PT. Mintage in Canada would explain it. A bit intriguing what.

I think there were a few of these sorts of mules (Canada/New Zealand) from the era but information seems pretty scant (not even sure what country they were found in).

Yes there are, quality control was a bit lacking.

The most famous was the Bahamas Mule of 1967, this was a NZ 2 cent piece tails with a Bahama Islands Heads, it seems the Bahamian nickel and Kiwi coin were the same size, but of different metals (Nickel vs Bronze). Its not that rare ($100 or so and a few thousand)

In 1985 was also a 50 cent NZ tails with a $1 Canadian heads. The Nickel $1 Canadian coin was almost the same size as a NZ 50 cent piece. This coin is so rare that no sales are known and like the 1981 error probably only 1 - 5 in existence.

Another error was the 20 cent NZ coin of 1975 struck on a Hong Kong $2 planchet. This was the scalloped one which was debuted in 1975 (The $5 coin was a huge decagonal thing) and again this coin is incredibly rare.

Numista says that it was muled with a Canadian dime, not a penny oddly enough.
