I just had a very nice early Christmas present in the form of another 1999 WAM. This one came from a load I brought back from the back roads of Alabama. I have only gone through about half of them. Pictures are from a scanner, as I don't have a decent camera, or a USB microscope.   Except for the large stain on the obverse, the coin has nice details. Happy Holidays To All |

ya that stain is devastating...other than that its a nice coin and 99 is hard to find.....congrats mfhorn

Think I need to refine my technique, I've been picking up about 300 dollars worth of pennies twice a week and when I take them from the rolls I have just been tossing them in a 5gal bucket, 5 gal bucket because when this started all I was doing is running them through a machine to pull the copper. Today I looked down in the bucket and see some newer looking wheats turned out to be 2- 1958, 1949, 1958D, 1953S, with the dates so close wonder if they pulled them out of a coin book or something,

yvairguy:5 gal. buckets? not a good idea,they tend to get heavy and you could be missing some very good varieties.Have you checked out http://www.coppercoins.com/ yet.If not then start with a "die variety search" for 1972. |

I did a lot of searching when I was a kid and started do some of this with my son a couple of months ago when he got started with some canadian money. I started getting him pennies, then I started searching with him, then I got a Ryedale just to start saving the copper and culling the zincs so we didn't have to search through them, then found that the Ryedale almost left an Indian cent in the reject pile so we are looking though everything and now have a microscope to search stuff easier. So it's been a quick progression to get back into this hobby, which is pretty cool because it's too cold to go out gold mining right now, so we now have a winter hobby. I have been getting lucky with the wheats and have found several rolls that people seem to be turning in, when I was a kid I CLEANED a lot of coins, some of these are the dirtiest coins I have ever seen, is there any "approved" way of knocking the grime off these things? I have thought about steam as all it is, is hot water. |

Yes, I am still at 10 on the 1999 Wide AMs, but now at 61 2000 Wide AMs and 79 1998 Wide AMs.
Here is another number to probably chase. I have found 30 2006 P 1DO-017s.

Keeping it on on an excel spread sheet (might as well) :) Trying to see what banks or areas put out the most copper...if there's a difference. We're right at 25%. |

so when you find that many of the same date do you just toss them in a tube or do you put each one on a flip card?

If they are about MS 60 or above I put them in a cardboard holder. I think that the 2006's 23 are still red. I guess 7 I mixed with the other lesser value doubles. I usually keep the more interesting coins separated. I used to keep them all in order, but have just resorted to throwing them all in a box. The WAMS that are not MS I have been just placing them in tubes. I do keep an excel file for all that I have found with both varieties and errors. I used to look at just the BU coins under a microscope, now I just throw the interesting years BU coins in boxes to look through later. I can spot most of the major doubles and Wide AMs just under a large magnifying glass. Mostly that is what I am looking for now. Currently I have 8 $50 bags to go through.

How do you find the 50 dollar bags? I was able to get a 50 dollar bag the other day, nice canvas bag, I have been asking all the banks and they all say NO, I don't see why they can't just sell them to me instead of sending them out. Most of them are just customer returned coin then have broken and put in the bags.
