Generally, I won't buy from so-so photos, this time was an exception. I got this from Gerry at GFRC who's a friend of the shop and all around great guy. I've chatted with him at various shows, and know him decently well. I know he's a very fair grader and am usually willing to take his word on a coin. He described the coin like this, Quote:Creamy Frosty Luster, Choice Surfaces. The obverse of this lustrous Trade dollar exhibits a light, cream-colored skin, while the reverse is nearly covered by rose-russet shades. The lighter toning serves to highlight the ample luster, which is consistent with the assigned grade. Type I reverse with berry to right of eagle claw. Well-struck, with nearly all stars sharp. A pleasing piece. I quite liked the reverse toning, and his word and words were good enough to get me to buy and at a very fair price. I actually got this at greysheet, so pretty happy there. So, what do you think this coin graded? Edited by GrapeCollects 12/07/2020 03:09 am

It is a beauty for sure. Photos not good enough for a grade but certainly would not be surprises by mid-MS

Much easier to buy on-line with higher value coins, if you personally know the seller. A very pleasing example.

I would say at least MS63 based on your standards...but MS64 T$1 wouldn't surprise me. Beautiful example...cross it off the list...Next? smat

Nice pickup! I think the obverse high points and slightly subdued luster (maybe better in hand) will hold this to MS-63.

the photos may not be helping determine remaining luster. based on these it appears that the obverse luster is broken across the surfaces. the reverse is well struck up but the obverse looks a little weak and not as sharp. I think the obverse may hold it MS63 but as smat45 stated a 64 would not surprise me if the photos are a little off. still a nice higher end coin

@Panzaldi
Gerry admits his photos show no luster. I've seen coins on his website that look dead and are lusterbombs in hand, he, and I quote, "Sucks at taking photos big time"

MS63
I have bought 6 or 7 nice coins from Gerry's website, and he has always been fair and honest. On one of the coins I asked him if the coin had been sent to CAC and he said, "yes, it failed. I liked the coin and bought it anyway.

grapecollects...it would be great to see some updated photos of this one when in hand. I'm particularly interested in the obverse to be able to see if there are any signs of circulation and the luster
