I have been collecting coins for some 40+ years and am lately been looking for VAMS, errors, and all kinds of varieties in many different denominations more than ever. I have been useing a 10x loupe and after looking at tooo many coins my eye's are just not the same.I have been checking out different kinds of microscopes, stereo sights, etc.

I was looking for this with my son the other day, on line and he suggested a digital usb microscope, set it up and plug it in to your computer and presto, the magnification is 10-200x and the best idea, you use your computer screen as your view.I do not have to use batteries and the screen on my computer is about 15 inches across and this should be sweet on the eye's. I hope when this arrives it is all I have read it to be and the eye's, I can feel the sight being saved already.
It was very inexpensive, around $80, and comes with a stand and from what I can tell I will have to set up a "booth" to view the coins in, and did I mention this microscope has a 1.3mp camera to capture what I see .I will follow up with this post when this "dream sounding" microscope/camera arrives and I have set it up. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this and their comments about using such?

I have the Digital Blue QX5, which does a decent job--despite its quirks with lighting and rough focus controls.
I'm quite happy with it--especially for the reduced eyestrain of simply placing a coin under the QX5, and viewing on my monitor.
And it does decent screen captures too--here are a few recent pics:

This is a composite built from a QX5 photo:

bryan, How are you, I hope well, while I have not received the usb microscope yet, I am glad you are another person who is pleased with this type of equipment.I am getting some HEAVY, negative remarks regarding this type of microscope, I do not budge easily and thought I would share the negative remarks with someone who actually has one and like you state, are very pleased with it, I too have an opinion, but I will wait for the proof once I have it in my hands, BE WELL, MIKE PS:I was looking at some 1878 MORGANS and wondered if you have seen or own one that has the 4 underlying tail feathers under the 7 tail feathers , or a dbling of the # 4 5 6 and 7 tail feathers? I mean some major dbling, looks very, very nice?

morgans dad, I have read your posts, and also the negative, as well. I hace the Digital Blue QX3. It is not quite as good as the "5", from the pictures I have seen posted. However, I have had good results, after modiying the plastic "barrier" so as to allow more light. I also made a base, contoured to allow it to seat in a ring, which in turn, mounts on mt QZs stereo-Zoom scope. The focus adjustment on the unit is so touchy, that it is frustrating to use. With the changes, it is quite managable now. I have a vision problem, and naturally, need something that will allow an image on a large screen. It was used on my 27" TV! It works dine, but I like a bit more control on the magnification, than is available, (10X, 60X, 200X. I like 20X, and 40X for most of my checking. It works better if you have a light source that is better that the integrated light. There are other "pro's, and Con's), but they are not needed here. For the money, it will do what you want, as evidenced by others who have made some p[rettynice photos in their posts. If you are satisfied with the rsults, after you have gotten familiar with it, then who else counts? We have our own likes, and dislikes. Enjoy, and it will be very easy for your son to use, as well.
Dick
