You've got a Morgan dollar there (as named after the designer), I'm not very good at grading Morgans, I would say it's probably a Fine (F)

If you're a budding collector and want to get to know all sorts about lots of coins I recommend buying the Red Book ("A Guide Book of United States coins")

If you're just interested in that specific coin, try googling an 1884 Morgan dollar and you'll find lots of sites that can give the melt value, sell value, mintage, etc

Mint: Philadelphia
Mintage: 14,070,000
Obverse Designer: George T. Morgan
Reverse Designer: George T. Morgan
Composition: Silver
Fineness: 0.9000
Weight: 26.7300g

I would rate the safety of this coin in VF35

Looks around F-12 to me. Common, circulated Morgan with decent surfaces.
